CADRE Critical Art and Design Revolutionary Education

CADRE (2018/403531/08) is a registered educational organisation, that seeks to facilitate critical consciousness through art based praxis. In essence, we focus on what we have dubbed as: "the facilitation of individual embedded Critical Consciousness skill sets, toward community and societal activation and change" (Nazier, 2020).

The NPO was initiated and is led by Farieda Nazier, who holds a Masters Degree in Art, Design and Architecture Education (Glasgow School of Art, Scotland) and two separate Higher Certificates in leadership (University of Johannesburg, South Africa). She is a practicing critical and transformative pedagogue and uses artist-based methods within her educational and consulting approaches.

“The lowest degree [of certainty],…belongs to one whose knowledge of fire comes merely from hearing it described…The second degree,…belongs to one whose knowledge of fire comes from seeing the light of its flames…The highest degree, belongs to one whose knowledge of fire comes from being burnt in it.” Martin Lings

“The most potent weapon of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed.” Steve Bantu Biko

“There's no such thing as neutral education. Education either functions as an instrument to bring about conformity or freedom.” Paolo Freire

For Paolo Freire and Steve Bantu Biko, education can be our confinement or our liberation. Our colonial history is evidence of the deployment of education toward political ends. The CADRE vision is premised on the notion of life long learning; and that the continued search for knowledge and consciousness is what will spark and fuel revolution.

We believe that Critical Consciousness is not a destination, but a temporal process and as Fidel Castro infers: “A revolution [within the self or society at large] is a struggle between the future and the past." As we uncover new insights and understandings, these too require interrogation to sustain its continued pertinence in the present.

To this end, CADRE facilitates the learning of consciousness-raising skills which puts each individual at the helm of their individual and relational praxis (theory and practice).

“We do not escape into philosophy, psychology, and art--we go there to restore our shattered selves into whole ones.” Anais Nin

Alongside this, and as an integrated vehicle of learning, the CADRE organization, offers training through and in various art-crafting-making-production proficiencies. These allow for embedded learning, that may evoke deeper modes of knowing. It is of course also a means to facilitate skills development in communities, potentially enabling and maintaining economic sustainability. The project draws on models of situated learning, dialogue and responsiveness, in order to allow for essential conversations, voice and agency among all participants.

Our specialization includes Leadership Development and Transformative Practices, all towards the end of social justice. Our offerings employ various modalities which facilitate dialogic interactions via:

  • Art production, design and performative arts,

  • Active collaborations with specialists in the field of Architecture, Theatre and Interior Design, Construction and Sustainable product design,  Jewellery Design, Goldsmithing and Metalsmithing, Fashion Design and Dressmaking, Cooking, Baking and Food preparation.

" I was part of the exhibition, Angry Youth Workshop and since then i fell in love with photography and art as a whole. I would love it if you could also go back to New Nation School and enhance those who love art. I really thank YOU for that workshop. "
